In Holland, the road to becoming a professional wallpaperhanger is a lot longer and a lot tougher than in the States. Just ask Joop Plaggenborg, owner of Wall Cover Specialist. FYI, the “J” in Joop is pronounced like a “Y,” and Joop rhymes with hope.
“In Holland you have to go to trade school or else you can’t get a job. You study and study and take exams. And if you’re good enough, they hire you as an apprentice. You have to work your way up.”
For seven years Joop studied and worked as an apprentice in his native Holland and, finally, after long hours and much effort, he became a master painter and wallpaperhanger. The hard work paid off. But the people who really benefit are his clients in the Boston Metrowest and Phoenix Metro areas. Joop has operated his business since 1987.
Joop will do just about any size job, from a powder room to a whole house. His prices might be slightly higher than those of other wallpaperhangers, but his customers know the money they pay is going for meticulous, professional wallpapering work.
“You have to like this kind of work and you have to be picky with yourself. If you don’t like the job, it just won’t work. The job keeps me on my toes. I don’t know exactly what I will be doing next, so I'm always learning new things. I still learn every day”.
“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a cheap price is forgotten,” says Joop, a member of the National Paperhanger’s Guild.
